Ingrown toenails are a common problem that affects many patients during their lifetimes. At OC Foot & Ankle, our Tustin podiatry office can help treat and relieve your ingrown toenails so that your feet can feel pain free once again. The ingrown nail is caused by a buildup of pressure that occurs in between the soft tissue of the toe and the nail. Pain, swelling and redness can make the nail become very painful. It is sometimes caused by improper trimming of the nail. Fungal infections, improperly fitted footwear and wearing narrow shoes or high heels can also cause ingrown nails. More rarely, it may be the result of an underlying bone tumor or from hereditary reasons.
Symptoms of ingrown nails include redness, drainage of pus along the toe’s nail bed, swelling and pain. Ingrown nails usually affect the big toe, but it may also affect other toes. Our Tustin podiatry office may recommend either surgery in our offices or creams that can help sooth the foot. Surgery is usually the best option, as it helps remove the nail border that is causing the problem. The nail may be removed either completely or partially. The procedure to remove an ingrown nail is called a matrixectomy, which eradicates the cells that grow the nail. Surgery is done using a local anesthetic and only takes a few minutes in office.
Following the surgery, we may prescribe an oral antibiotic to ensure that no infection takes place and will give the patient instructions on how to care for the nail afterwards. Our Tustin podiatry office is experienced in all aspects of foot care and podiatry and we treat many conditions and complications of the foot and toe, including bunions, hammertoes, metatarsal problems and more. We also provide orthotic shoes when needed, which can help to alleviate many foot conditions.
